MI send CSK out of reckoning for IPL play-offs with five-wicket win

Mumbai: Mumbai Indians dashed defending champions Chennai Super Kings’ dim hopes of a place in the Indian Super League play-offs with a five-wicket win in a low-scoring match here on Thursday. Opting to bowl, MI bowled out CSK for 97, with paceman Daniel Sams running (3/16 in 4 overs), though the MS Dhoni-led side’s top-order took three quicks off a quick start. Took wickets, and then huff and hiss for overhaul with 31 balls to spare. Small target of 98 runs.

Tilak Verma (34 not out off 32 balls) and Hrithik Shuken (18) put on a 48-run partnership for the fifth over to calm tired nerves. MI reached 103 for 5 in 14.5 overs.

Tim David remained unbeaten on 16 off just seven balls.

With their eighth loss in 12 matches, CSK are out of the play-off spot. He finished ninth with eight points.

Out of the race for a play-off berth not too long ago, MI finished 10th and bottom with three wins from 12 matches.

Both CSK and MI have two crucial matches left to play. This will be the first time in IPL history that neither Mumbai nor CSK will be part of the play-offs.

Defending 97, Mukesh Choudhary (3/23) struck Ishan Kishan (6) off the fifth ball of the opening over well with his body to see Dhoni see through a thin edge behind the stumps.

MI captain Rohit Sharma hit a boundary each in the next two overs off Chowdhary and Simarjit Singh. But Simarjeet’s last laugh was caught by Dhoni in the fourth over at the hands of Rohit.

Choudhary then gave Daniel Sams (1) and Tristan Stubbs (0) hope of a CSK miracle in the fifth over in a span of three balls.

After the powerplay, MI scored 36 for 4 and Hrithik survived after a fond review.

Moeen Ali broke the fifth-wicket partnership between Verma and Shuken later in the 13th over, but it was too late as MI needed just 17 runs in 7.2 overs.

Earlier, Sams had broken up CSK’s top order from which the Dhoni-led side could never recover.

Riley Meredith and Kumar Karthikeya took two wickets each, while Jasprit Bumrah and Ramandeep Singh took a wicket each as CSK played the innings in 16 overs.

CSK’s troubles compounded with the non-availability of the Decision Review System (DRS) due to a power cut at one of the floodlight towers at the Wankhede Stadium after the start of their innings, during which they lost three wickets, including two LBW decisions.

Captain Dhoni played single handed for CSK in his innings of 36 not out off 33 balls with the help of four fours and two sixes. None of his colleagues supported him in his pathetic batting performance.

Dwayne Bravo (12), who shared a 39-run partnership for the seventh wicket with Dhoni, was the second-best batsman in CSK’s innings. But for the 15 extra players accepted by the Mumbai bowlers, the total for CSK would have been very small.

In the end, Dhoni ran out of partners.

Conway, who played a match-winning 87 in CSK’s match against Delhi Capitals, hit the pads on the second ball of the innings bowled by Sams. The umpire raised his finger though the ball hit him just below knee roll and it looked like it was going down leg. There was no DRS, and Conway had to go to zero.

Two balls later, Moeen Ali (0) made another Sams delivery for Hrithik Schuken to take a catch at short midwicket, as CSK were down two for five in the opening over.

It was Bumrah’s turn to join the party as he dismissed Robin Uthappa (1) who could not ask for a DRS review of the LBW decision.

CSK got some respite after a 10-ball devastation but Sam was not done yet as they removed opener Ruturaj Gaikwad (7), who dismissed Ishan Kishan from behind the wicket on the first ball of the fifth over. After the powerplay, CSK scored 32 runs for 5 wickets.

After Shivam Dubey was dismissed in the seventh over, Dhoni and Dwayne Bravo slowed the procession in the dressing room as they took CSK to 72 for 6 at the end of the 12th over.

But CSK were back to square one as Bravo, Simarjit Singh and Mahesh Thekshana were reduced to 87 for 9 at the end of 15 overs in the space of eight balls.

mittal: Cultural differences have hurt merged Voda Idea: Sunil Mittal

Bharti Enterprises chairman Sunil Mittal said cultural differences between the different merging conglomerates have led to conflict that Vodafone Idea – the telecom joint venture between UK’s Vodafone Plc and India’s Aditya Birla Group – faced today. doing.

Mittal said at a CII event on Thursday, “When Vodafone (India) and Idea Cellular merged, I said it wouldn’t work because you have two different cultures put together, and That’s exactly what happened with the company.”

He added that the Vi merger did not work because “the UK’s Vodafone is a multinational company with a very open culture, while Birla” is a large business enterprise rooted in India with a financial-results orientation.

“Vi should have been a great company,” Mittal said, noting that at the time of the merger (in August 2018), it had the largest network in the country, the largest fiber network and the largest market share at 42%. Was too. But instead it became “a classic case of mix-and-match culture not working”.

V did not respond to Mittal’s comments at the CII event.

But a person familiar with Vi’s thinking, however, dismissed these comments.

“Many people who are part of the Airtel culture have moved on from my company… These negative comments have been made well before the Vi merger took effect, and at some point, the company found itself creating a cocoon and Decided to ignore all about it,” he told ET.

This person said that while there were genuine apprehensions about Wei’s merger, “it had nothing to do with culture … the concern was layoffs”.

To this end, Mittal said that credibility of governance also plays a big role in fundraising, noting that V has been struggling to raise funds for the past two years, it took only six months to raise billions of dollars for Bharat Airtel. There were phone calls. period of crisis.

However, an executive familiar with Vi’s strategy countered Mittal by saying once again that Vi’s fundraising faced challenges due to the credibility of the regime, but because the telco failed to create value in its 4G services. Used to be. This, he said, was the result of a lengthy merger process that the two erstwhile companies – Vodafone India and Idea Cellular – had gone through.

It took a total of about three years, from the announcement to the full amalgamation of the two companies.

“Meanwhile they (VI) failed to build and expand their 4G base, which meant that investors were not seeing value in the company,” he told ET.

Focusing on the emerging geopolitical scenario amid the pandemic and the ongoing Russo-Ukraine war, Mittal said that in a departure from global supply chains, the world is increasingly moving into the era of reliable supply chains. Many companies, he said, were, in fact, shifting their supply chains out of China, opting for reliable supply chains, even at the risk of higher costs.

“I think unlike the global supply chain we’re going to have reliable supply chains and that’s a big, massive change that you’re going to see. And if that means more pain, more costs with suffering, So be it,” he said.

Mittal, however, expects India to benefit from these innings and get tremendous tailwinds if he plays his cards well. The major advantage of India, he said, is that it is “a continent of consumers endowed with its own markets, its own resources. More importantly, India is also a reliable source, and democracy of supply chains and There is a possibility of coming in open societies.

He said that “the era of globalization is over,” but India can take advantage of these changes by growing its semiconductor manufacturing business, strengthening its defense gear manufacturing capabilities, given the constraints posed by geopolitical tensions with China. In addition to, the war between Russia – Ukraine.
