West Indies penalized for slow over-rate, road to India 2023 suffers a blow

bridgetown [Barbados]: The road to direct qualification for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 for the West Indies cricket team seems far away as two Super League points were deducted in connection with a slow over rate in the third ODI against New Zealand.

Pooran-led West Indies were found guilty of not completing their overs in the allotted time and were therefore penalized by docking two Super League points.

The call was made by match referee Richie Richardson even after allowances were considered for the slow pace.

On-field umpires Joel Wilson and Leslie Reifer, third umpire Gregory Brathwaite and fourth umpire Nigel Duguid made allegations after the hosts’ five-wicket loss. West Indies captain Pooran later accepted the charge.

His points cut leaves him with 88 points, which is unlikely to place him in the top eight at the end of the Super League season and guarantees him a direct chance to play in the tournament in India.

With a win value, ten points, Ireland (ninth on 68 points) have a better net run rate than West Indies, and two wins at home against Bangladesh in the upcoming series will further cement their rankings. Sri Lanka (10th on 62) and South Africa (11th on 49) both have several series left and are ready to strike.

The Cricket World Cup qualifiers in Zimbabwe next year will be the only route for West Indies to reach India in 2023 if they fall outside the top eight in terms of Super League rankings.

The top two teams from the Cricket World Cup Qualifier play-offs and the top three teams from the Cricket World Cup League 2 join the bottom five teams from the Super League in the Qualifiers to grab their chances of playing in the World Cup.

The Super League action has now moved to Australia where the Aaron Finch-led Australian team will host Zimbabwe in Townsville from 28 August to 3 September.

India could improve their ODI rankings if they host South Africa for three ODIs in October.

New Zealand will have to extend their lead when they take on rivals Australia in the three-match series next month.

Australia (101 ranking points), on the other hand, can overtake Pakistan if they do well in the back-to-back home series against Zimbabwe and New Zealand.

A few days ahead of India’s opening campaign in the Asia Cup T20 tournament in the United Arab Emirates, the team suffered a major setback when a report said that head coach Rahul Dravid has tested positive for COVID-19.

A media report said that it is not clear whether Dravid will join the squad for the crucial opening match or fly to the UAE after getting clearance from the Indian Cricket Board’s medical staff.

However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not yet confirmed Dravid to be Kovid-19 positive.

India Inc needs to invest more in sports at the grassroots level: Neeraj Chopra

Olympic javelin medalist Neeraj Chopra told ET in an online interaction on Monday that Indian corporates need to invest more at the grassroots level to promote sports in the country.

“There is a good amount of interest and sponsorship from corporate houses for top level-reaching athletes and sportspersons. But if there is a lot of corporate sponsorship at the grassroots level, it will be more beneficial to promote sports in India,” Chopra said. He was speaking at the launch of a new campaign for Limca Sportz, the lemon drink brand of beverage maker Coca-Cola, for which Chopra recently signed an endorsement deal. Comparing with cricket, where most sponsors are currently are also odd, Chopra said; “there is a lot of interest in sports other than cricket as well, and it will grow”.

India won a total of 61 medals in the recently concluded Commonwealth Games

in sports as diverse as badminton, weightlifting and boxing. And in July this year, Chopra became only the second Indian to win a medal at the World Athletics Championships.

While brands benefit athletes when they win, industry executives say sponsorships have to be long-term and start with beginners in the form of academies and specialized training to benefit both the athletes and the sport.
