Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today unveiled three Durand Cup trophies namely Durand Cup, Shimla Trophy and President’s Cup in Guwahati.
The Chief Minister described the holding of tournament matches in Assam as a historic event for the people of the state. Appreciating the armed forces for being the custodians of the tournament, the Chief Minister said that the 131st edition of the Durand Cup was special in the sense that 20 teams, including 11 from the Indian Super League, would participate in it.
Stating that football is not just a sport but a feeling for the people of Assam, Sarma said that the government is nurturing talent so that the country can become a sports superpower in the days to come. He further said that all efforts are on to revive the glory of tournaments like Bordoloi Trophy in the state.
Speaking on the steps taken by the Assam government for the development of sports culture in the state, Sarma elaborated on measures like construction of new stadiums, coaching camps, employment opportunities for sportspersons, sports pension etc.
