Dhawan, considered one of India’s top batsmen along with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the past, will lead a team of several fringe players in the three-match ODI series against West Indies starting here on Friday.
When a journalist asked him on the eve of the tour opener if he found the criticism strange, Dhawan replied in the negative.
“Azeeb kya lagega, ab to 10 saal hoga (I don’t feel weird, I’ve heard it for 10 years. People keep speaking, I keep performing. If I listened to them, I wouldn’t be here.)
“I have experience, so I am not too worried. As long as I self-analyze and improve, nothing matters,” said Dhawan.
“I’m a very positive person. For me, positivity is about self-belief and the confidence you have. I’ve had that since I’ve been playing for so many years. I’m here because I did something good It’s things. That’s the positivity I want to give to the youth.”
Dhawan, who lost his place in the last T20 World Cup squad due to poor form, is hoping to re-establish himself in the ODI side.
Dhawan will face stiff competition from players like Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ishaan Kishan and Sanju Samson when young talent gets a chance.
His Instagram reel of head coach Rahul Dravid and other team members has been a huge hit, with the India stand-in captain saying it is his way of creating a vibrant dressing room atmosphere.
“Earlier, we used to have team dinners. Now, we reel,” he said at a pre-match press conference.
“We want to create that kind of energy where we trust each other to ensure results. There is pressure in international cricket, for sure, but it’s not the kind of pressure that affects my personality or my style of play. Will change. I have a lot of faith in myself and the team.
