Earlier this week, Guterres wrote to Putin and Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky to welcome him to Moscow and Kyiv to “discuss urgent steps to bring peace to Ukraine”.
Guterres will visit Moscow on April 26, two months after Russia’s February 24 invasion of Ukraine, the UN spokesman’s office said on Friday.
The UN chief “will have a working meeting and lunch with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. The Secretary-General will be welcomed by President Vladimir Putin on 26 April”, it said.
On Wednesday, UN chief spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters that two separate letters were handed over to the Permanent Missions of the Russian Federation and Ukraine on Tuesday afternoon.
“In these letters, the Secretary-General asked President Vladimir Putin to receive him in Moscow and President Volodymyr Zelensky to receive him in Kyiv. At this time of great crisis and consequence, he would like to discuss urgent steps, said the Secretary-General. Ukraine To bring about peace in the world and the future of multilateralism based on the Charter of the United Nations and international law,” he said.
The UN chief noted that Ukraine and Russia are both founding members of the United Nations and have always been strong supporters of the organisation.
