Jill Biden to Attend Press Launch of Costume Institute Exhibition – WWD – Pen 18

America’s First Lady, Jill Biden, will attend the press launch Monday of the Spring Costume Institute exhibition “In America: An Anthology of Fashion.”

The event serves as the formal unveiling of the exhibit, which explores American fashion from the late 19th to mid-20th centuries through nearly 100 clothing pieces in the American Wing period rooms of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The First Lady will give brief remarks and will be introduced by Diana M. Montalvo, a library and collections intern at The Costume Institute.

Comments will also be on The Met’s Daniel H. Weiss, President and Chief Executive Officer; Max Hollin, Marina Kellen French directors; Andrew Bolton, Wendy Yu curator in charge of The Costume Institute, and Sylvia Yount, Lawrence A. Fleischman with curator, Eva Chen, Vice President of Fashion Partnerships at Instagram. Following the comments, Biden will tour the exhibition with Met interns as well as Bolton and Yount.

“It is an extraordinary honor and privilege to welcome Dr. Jill Biden, First Lady of the United States of America to The Metropolitan Museum of Art,” Weiss said. “Together we look forward to recognizing the powerful ways art can teach us about our past, connect us to the present, and inspire a vision for the future.

Hollin said, “This is a particularly timely and relevant exhibition that explores lesser-recognized stories of American cultural history, offering more detailed ways of understanding the past. We thank Dr. We are thrilled to have Biden join us.”

“In America: An Anthology of Fashion,” opens to the public on May 7. It is the second in a two-part exhibition, which opened with “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion” in September 2021. Both will close on September 5, 2022.

That evening the exhibition press preview will be followed by The Met Gala, which serves as the primary source of funding for The Costume Institute. The exhibition and benefit for the Costume Institute is made possible by Instagram, with additional support provided by Condé Nast.

While the Office of the First Lady has always declined to discuss what Biden wears, she has been a champion of American designers since her husband, President Joe Biden, took office.
