federation of indian fantasy sports: Government forms inter-ministerial panel to regulate online gaming

The government has constituted an inter-ministerial panel to work on regulations for the online gaming industry and identify a nodal ministry to look after the sector, an official source said on Thursday.

The seven-member panel includes the CEO of government think-tank NITI Aayog as well as secretaries of Home Affairs, Revenue, Industry and Internal Trade, Electronics and IT, Information and Broadcasting and Sports.

The source said that the panel will look into the promotion of online gaming and framing of regulatory mechanisms for the segment, safety of gamers, ease of doing business, among other aspects.

The Federation of Indian Fantasy Sports (FIFS) lauded the government’s decision to constitute an Inter-Ministerial Task Force (IMTF) for online gaming.

FIFS said, “This move indicates the impetus that the government is ready to give to the growth of India’s online gaming industry. The task force is a major step forward in creating regulatory certainty for the nascent and rapidly growing online gaming industry.”

Online gaming and fantasy sports industry leaders – FIFS President Bimal Julka, Fantasy Arena Co-Founder Prateek Gosar, Khelo Fantasy Founder Santosh Smith, among others called on Rajiv Chandrashekhar, Minister of State for Skill Development, Electronics and IT to discuss .

FIFS said the task force will be tasked with examining the issues facing the online gaming industry, understanding global best practices in the legal and legislative framework, and bringing about a comprehensive and equitable regulatory regime for a responsible, transparent and safe online gaming environment. has been assigned.

It said the formation of the task force is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to make India’s digital gaming sector a global powerhouse.

FIFS said, “A unified regulation will go a long way in removing the complexities and compliance burden on online gaming platform operators. We feel that regulatory action in the right direction will positively impact India’s emerging industry.”
