“This year, the onset of southwest monsoon over Kerala is likely to occur earlier than the normal date,” it said in a statement. “The onset of monsoon over Kerala is likely on 27th May with a model error of ±4 days.”
The Met Office said the progress of the southwest monsoon over the Indian mainland is marked by the onset of monsoon over Kerala and is an important indicator that characterizes the transition from a hot and dry season to a rainy season.
In the Indian monsoon region, early monsoon rains are experienced over the South Andaman Sea and the monsoon winds then move north-westwards into the Bay of Bengal.
“As per the normal dates of onset/progress of monsoon, the southwest monsoon advances over the Andaman Sea around May 22,” the IMD said.
Conditions are becoming favorable for further advance of Southwest Monsoon into some parts of South Andaman Sea, Nicobar Islands and southeast Bay of Bengal around May 15, 2022.
The southwest monsoon contributes 74.9% of the annual rainfall. The June-September monsoon is important for agricultural production and economic development as almost 60% of India’s agricultural land depends on rainfall.
Reservoir condition
The Central Water Commission said that the live storage of 140 important reservoirs for the week ending May 12 is 58.759 Billion Cubic Meter (BCM), which is 12.869 BCM more than the average of the last 10 years.
This is equivalent to 33% of the storage capacity at the entire reservoir level.
