Maison Francis Kurkdjian Becomes Château de Versailles Patron – WWD – Pen 18

Perfumer’s Garden: Niche fragrance house Maison Francis Kurcadjian has become a patron of the Château de Versailles and will support the creation of its perfumer garden.

That garden will be located in the Châteauneuf Orangerie garden, in the heart of the Trienon estate, and will include hundreds of Platt varieties that are used in perfumery. Kurkdjian is working with Trianon gardeners to select hundreds of aromatic plants inspired by the Trianon gardens of the 17th century.

“This extraordinary garden will include traditional species, such as roses and jasmine, as well as plants with stunning aromas, from chocolate to apples,” LVMH said in a statement. “There will also be malformed plants and so-called ‘muted’ plants, such as hyacinth, peony and violet, whose scent must be artificially reproduced in order to scent.”

The Perfumer’s Garden is set to open next spring.

The history of perfume runs deep in the Château de Versailles, where in the 17th century Louis XIV began work that later became the Grand Trianon. Flowers – and perfumes – were a la mode, and the Tryon garden became home to odoriferous species. The LVMH called the palace “the cradle of the perfumery craft from the late 17th century”.

Kurkdjian has a long history with Versailles and its palace. He attended the city’s perfumery school, and a few years after graduating from there, he recreated Marie-Antoinette’s Silage de la Reine fragrance, sculpting the juice from archival documents.

In 2006, Mark Chaya, co-founder of Kurkdjian and Maison Francis Kurkdjian, created an olfactory installation for the festival of Versailles, called “Soleil de Minuit”. During the two consecutive years that followed, the perfumer dreamed of an olfactory experience in the garden of the chateau for the Grand Eux Nocturnes Night Fountain Show.

LVMH acquired Maison Francis Kurkdjian in 2017.
