The Olympic silver medalist put on a total of 201 kg (88 kg + 113 kg) to stamp her right in the competition and achieve a Commonwealth Games record in the process.
The silver went to Mauritius’s Marie Hanitra Roilya Ranaivosoa (172kg) and the bronze to Canada’s Hannah Kaminski (171kg).
In a remarkable performance, Chanu broke Commonwealth (Commonwealth Championship and Commonwealth) and Games records in the snatch. He broke sports records in clean and jerk as well as total lift.
A huge favorite in her weight category, the 27-year-old Chanu dropped her starting weight at 84kg before converting her first attempts to 80kg in the snatch and 105 in the clean and jerk. Going into the competition, his personal bests were 88kg and 119kg, world records in clean and jerk, totaling 207kg.
Her nearest rival in the field, Nigeria’s Stella Kingsley, came into the competition with a personal best of 168 kg (72 kg + 96 kg), bridging the gap between her and the rest.
The atmosphere at the NEC arena was electrifying, prompting the athletes to give their best with music while keeping the fans entertained.
As MC also pointed out, with Chanu going head and shoulders, the outing was more about competing with himself than his opponents.
The first attempt in the snatch was smooth before Chanu lifted 88kg in the second before dropping 90kg for the third and final attempt. She was not able to record a new personal best, but still went into the clean and jerk with a 12kg advantage over Ranivosoa.
The clean and jerk began in a dramatic fashion when Marija Akhtar of Bangladesh fell to the floor after a failed 70kg attempt.
With her closest rivals trying 15kg less than Chanu, the result was already a foregone conclusion.
The silver and bronze battle went to the wire with Kingsley, Kaminski and Ranivosa.
It was a heartbreaking end for Nigerian weightlifter Kingsley, whose 98kg effort was declared a no lift after a premature celebration.
Chanu lifted 109 kg comfortably in her first attempt and 113 kg in her second.
She didn’t risk equaling her world record of 119kg and went for 115kg in her final lift, but missed.
