Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told a bench of Justices DY Chandrachud, AS Bopanna and JB Paridwala that two meetings of the government and the committee of administrators with FIFA have been held and efforts are being made to “break some ice” on it. Under-17 Women’s World Cup in India.
He requested that the matter be deferred till August 22 so that a consensus can be reached among the active stakeholders of AIFF.
Mehta said a few words of the court that the stakeholders are trying to resolve will help them in their endeavours.
The bench observed that it is a great international event for children below the age of 17 years and it is only concerned with the fact that the tournament is held in the country.
It states that if someone from outside is trying to interfere in it, it will not be tolerated.
The bench asked the Center to play an active role in the matter and help in lifting the suspension of AIFF.
FIFA on Tuesday suspended India for “undue influence of third parties” and stripped the country of hosting the Under-17 Women’s World Cup.
The country was to host the FIFA tournament from 11-30 October.
This is the first time in its 85-year history that AIFF has been banned by FIFA.
India was banned after Praful Patel was removed from the post of AIFF President by the Supreme Court on May 18 for not holding elections in December 2020.
The court had appointed a three-member Committee of Administrators (CoA) headed by former apex court judge AR Dave to manage the affairs of the national federation.
The CoA, which has former Chief Commissioner of India SY Qureshi and former India captain Bhaskar Ganguly as other members, was also to frame its constitution in line with the National Sports Code and model guidelines.
