Pooran-led West Indies were found guilty of not completing their overs in the allotted time and were therefore penalized by docking two Super League points.
The call was made by match referee Richie Richardson even after allowances were considered for the slow pace.
On-field umpires Joel Wilson and Leslie Reifer, third umpire Gregory Brathwaite and fourth umpire Nigel Duguid made allegations after the hosts’ five-wicket loss. West Indies captain Pooran later accepted the charge.
His points cut leaves him with 88 points, which is unlikely to place him in the top eight at the end of the Super League season and guarantees him a direct chance to play in the tournament in India.
With a win value, ten points, Ireland (ninth on 68 points) have a better net run rate than West Indies, and two wins at home against Bangladesh in the upcoming series will further cement their rankings. Sri Lanka (10th on 62) and South Africa (11th on 49) both have several series left and are ready to strike.
The Cricket World Cup qualifiers in Zimbabwe next year will be the only route for West Indies to reach India in 2023 if they fall outside the top eight in terms of Super League rankings.
The top two teams from the Cricket World Cup Qualifier play-offs and the top three teams from the Cricket World Cup League 2 join the bottom five teams from the Super League in the Qualifiers to grab their chances of playing in the World Cup.
The Super League action has now moved to Australia where the Aaron Finch-led Australian team will host Zimbabwe in Townsville from 28 August to 3 September.
