FIFA India: FIFA chief Infantino might call on PM Modi next month to discuss Indian football

Gianni Infantino, the president of the governing body of world football, is expected to visit India next month and meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss the future of Indian football. This was disclosed during the meeting of the Executive Committee of the All India Football Federation (AIFF) here on Monday.

Infantino’s tour, if it takes place, will coincide with the final leg of the FIFA Women’s Under-17 World Cup, which is scheduled to take place in the country from October 11 to 30.

“At the beginning of the meeting, the members were informed that FIFA President Mr. Gianni Infantino may visit India in the last week of October to discuss with the Honorable Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi the way forward for Indian football, AIFF said in a statement issued after the executive committee meeting.

AIFF Secretary General Shaji Prabhakaran said, “The (AIFF) President briefed the Executive Committee on the discussions held with the FIFA President and the possibility of him meeting our Prime Minister, which will be updated once it is determined. ”

He said, “It will be an important day when the FIFA President will meet our honorable Prime Minister. He will make some announcements which will be path-breaking.”

This was the second executive committee meeting of the new government headed by chairman Kalyan Choubey and general secretary Prabhakaran.

Former Mohun Bagan and East Bengal goalkeeper Choubey became the new AIFF president after defeating former India captain Bhaichung Bhutia 33-1 in an election decided by 34 members of the Electoral College made up of state association representatives.

Choubey, the Bharatiya Janata Party leader from West Bengal, thus became the first former Indian player to be elected as the head of the country’s football governing body.
