hockey india: Dilip Tirkey elected new Hockey India president

Former India captain Dilip Tirkey, who is leading the race for the post of Hockey India President, was on Friday elected unopposed for the top post. The Hockey India elections were to be held on 1 October, but the results were announced earlier as there were no contestants for any of the posts, paving the way for the incumbent candidates to be elected unopposed as per the federation’s constitution.

Uttar Pradesh hockey chief Rakesh Katyal and Hockey Jharkhand’s Bhola Nath Singh, who were in fray for the president’s post, chose Tirkey after they withdrew their nominations on Friday.

Bhola Nath has been elected unopposed as the General Secretary.

The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has approved the appointments of Tirkey and his team.

The FIH, in a letter, said that when the number of contesting candidates for a position is equal to or less than the number of posts, they shall be deemed to have been elected unopposed in accordance with the election by-laws on the Hockey India website.

“Therefore, we are glad to see that the Executive Board of Hockey India has been elected as posted on the Hockey India website and the selection of the posts for all the posts was done unanimously,” it said.
