shahbaz: Umesh Yadav, Shreyas Iyer and Shahbaz Ahmed added to India squad for South Africa T20s

The trio of pacer Umesh Yadav, batsman Shreyas Iyer and all-rounder Shahbaz Ahmed were included in the Indian squad for the three-match T20I series against South Africa starting here on Wednesday.

Senior pacer Mohammed Shami, who missed the recently concluded T20I series against Australia after contracting the COVID-19 infection, is yet to make a full recovery and thus the T20I against Proteas Will not be a part of matches.

Deepak Hooda has also been ruled out of the series due to a back injury. The all-rounder is at the NCA to “manage ahead of his injury”.

“The All India Senior Selection Committee has selected Umesh Yadav in place of Shami and Shreyas Iyer in place of Hooda,” a BCCI release said.

Shahbaz Ahmed has also been included in the T20 squad.

Umesh was brought in in place of Shami in the series against Australia. He has featured in the series-opener but has not played the second and third T20Is.

At the same time, left-arm spin all-rounder Shahbaz is still uncapped. He was selected in the Indian ODI squad for the Zimbabwe series in August as Washington Sundar’s replacement, but did not miss a game.

Rookie pacer Arshdeep Singh, who was rested for the series against Australia, has signed the team for three T20 Internationals.

The series against South Africa will serve as the final dress rehearsal for both sides ahead of the marquee event in Australia next month.

All-rounder Hardik Pandya and senior seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who have been rested for the series ahead of the T20 World Cup next month, have also reported to the NCA for “conditioning related work”.

Revised Indian squad for South Africa T20I:

Rohit Sharma (capt), KL Rahul (vice-captain), Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant (wk), Dinesh Karthik (wk), R Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Harshal Patel, Deepak Chahar, Jasprit Bumrah , Umesh Yadav, Shreyas Iyer and Shahbaz Ahmed.
