sunrisers: SA T20 Auctions: IPL owners loosen purse strings as young Stubbs gets 9 million Rand from Sunrisers EC

South African batting sensation Tristan Stubbs kicked off a bidding frenzy with Sunrisers Eastern Cape getting his services for 9.2 million rand (over USD 500,000) at the inaugural SA T20 league auction here on Monday. Six teams in the league are owned by IPL franchises – MI Cape Town (Reliance), Pretoria Capital (JSW), Paarl Royals (Royals Sports Group), Durban Super Giants (RPG-Sanjiv Goenka), Johannesburg Super Kings (India Cements) Sunrisers Eastern Cape (Kaviya Maran, owner of Sunrisers Hyderabad).

With a salary cap of Rs 34 million (approximately USD 1.9 million, INR 15 crore) per team, the IPL saw strong bidding with stubs playing for Mumbai Indians the most sought after.

Four franchises were involved in bidding with MI Cape Town, after which Paarl Royals made the first move. However, in the end it was Johannesburg Super Kings and Sunrisers Eastern Cape who fought tooth and nail before placing a winning bid of Rs 9.2 million.

“I’m still trembling,” was Stubbs’ first reaction.

The other big buy for Sunrisers was their own IPL players – left-arm pacer Marco Jensen was bought for 6.1 million (USD 344,000).

One of the other notable gainers was left-hander Riley Rossouw, who laughed his way to the bank with a bid of 6.9 million (USD 390,000 approx) from Pretoria Capitals.

Among the known players, Lungi Ngidi received a bid of 3.4 million (USD 191,000 USD), while Tabrez Shamsi received a bid of 4.3 million (USD 242,000) from the same franchise.

Hard-hitting Heinrich Klaasen was picked by Durban Super Giants for Rs 45 lakh (USD 252,000), while Keshav Maharaj got 2.5 million (USD 141,000) from Sanjeev Goenka’s team.

Johannesburg Super Kings picked England batsman David Malan for 2.7 million (USD 152,000) and hard-hitting youngster Harry Brooke for 2.1 million (USD 118,000).

World Cup-winning England captain Eoin Morgan, South Africa’s ODI captain Temba Bavuma and Sri Lanka’s Asia Cup-winning opening pair, Kusal Mendis and Pathum Nissenka are among the big names not sold.
