Roger Binny to replace Ganguly as BCCI president, Jay Shah will continue as secretary, says BCCI sources

Roger Binny, the 1983 World Cup champion for India, will succeed Sourav Ganguly as BCCI president at the board’s annual meeting on October 18, BCCI sources revealed on Tuesday.

The 67-year-old from Bangalore will serve as the 36th board chairman, it was agreed after frantic talks and backchannel discussions over the past week.

As BCCI secretary, Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s son Jay Shah will serve a second consecutive term. Shah will replace Ganguly as India’s representative on the ICC board.

The only Congressman in the BCCI cabinet is Rajiv Shukla, who will continue as the vice-president. Arun Singh Dhumal, younger brother of Sports Minister Anurag Thakur, will now become the chairman of the IPL. He will replace Brijesh Patel. Influential Maharashtra BJP leader Ashish Shelar will be the new treasurer, which means he will not be the president of the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA). He was to play the role with the support of the Sharad Pawar faction. Devjit Saikia, a close aide of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, will replace Jayesh George as the new joint secretary.

Whether or not BCCI will contest for the post of ICC President is yet to be decided.

“An influential minister in the central government played a key role in deciding the positions in the formation of the board,” PTI quoted a BCCI source as saying.

Binny will officially take charge of the BCCI during the AGM in Mumbai on 18 October. Every candidate will be elected without opposition, so there will be no election for any position

The medium pacer was one of the architects of India’s historic World Cup victory in 1983. In eight games, he took 18 wickets, the most in that edition of the prestigious tournament.

Ganguly, who arrived in Mumbai on Monday night, met many influential people in New Delhi. Though Ganguly was keen on another term as the BCCI President, he was told that there was no precedent for giving a second term to the Board President.

A BCCI source revealed, “Sourav was offered the chairmanship of the IPL, but he politely declined the offer. His argument was that he would have accepted to head the sub-committee in BCCI after heading the same institution. can not do.”

Binny is a surprising choice to lead the BCCI. However, indications were dropped that he would get some position when the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) named him as its representative at the BCCI AGM instead of secretary Santosh Menon.

“Roger is one of the finest human beings and a complete gentleman who has graced the ground for India. He is also a World Cup hero and has a clean image. He resigned from the selection committee because His son Stuart was back in the India dispute,” the BCCI source said.

In Dhumal’s case, the decision makers waited for Ganguly to take a decision on the IPL president’s post and once he declined, they promoted the man from Himachal, who was considered one of the most accomplished men in the previous BCCI cabinet. known as.

With Ganguly out of the picture, the representation of the former was always the call of Assam CM Biswa Sarma as he played a crucial role last time as well.

The names of the members in the BCCI Apex Council and the IPL Governing Council will be known when the final list is published in a few days.
