FIFA said the charge was made “due to chants” in Sunday’s game against Qatar and cited the section of its disciplinary code dealing with discrimination.
The chants were reportedly directed at Chile, which brought a legal case before the World Cup to try to replace Ecuador.
FIFA gave no timetable for handling the case against the Ecuadorian Football Federation, which is held responsible for the behavior of fans at games. Ecuadorian fans attracted global attention for their chants of “We want beer” in Spanish during the team’s 2–0 victory at El Bayt Stadium. This was in reference to FIFA and Qatari organizers banning the sale of beer alongside alcohol in stadiums.
