northeast: Commonwealth Games 2022: Northeast takes centre stage

This is no longer a deviation. Rather, it is ideal. Four of India’s first eight medals have come from athletes from the Northeast and this is a testament to the region’s importance from the point of view of Indian sports.

The Northeast and sports have always gone hand in hand. While Dingko Singh and Kunjarani Devi were the flag bearers in the 1990s, they were followed by Mary Kom, Sarita Devi and Lovlina Borgohain in boxing, Mirabai Chanu, Bindyarani Devi and Jeremy Lalrinnuga in weightlifting, and Sushila Devi in judo.

“I grew up in the middle of physical activity,” Jeremy, whose father was a national-level boxer, said. “When I did well in the Youth Olympics, the dream got bigger. That I also have to do at the senior level. Seeing Mirabai (Chanu) doing this in Tokyo made us all believe that we can do it on the biggest scale.

For Bindyarani, whose father runs a small grocery store and brother is still unemployed, sport is a means to support the family. “We did not have a cable connection at home. On the day of my competition, the connection was finally taken and my father closed his grocery store to watch my show in the evening. Medal means a lot to me and it will help me to do something for my family.

While facilities in the Northeast have gotten much better over the past decade, exceptional performances at big events make a real difference. When Lovlina won the medal in Tokyo, a proper road to her house was literally built overnight. Dignitaries from all over the region wanted to meet him, his village got a new look.

Mirabai helped put things in perspective, “Things are not easy. In the Northeast, sports are an opportunity for families to make a difference and have a better life. It is a lifeline. Today the whole of India has showered their love on me. Think about what will happen to the kids in the area and how much they’ll want to play. It’s a chain reaction and I don’t think there’s any stopping it now.”

At a time when we talk of mental strength as the key to success in sport, it is something that happens to most of these athletes. For Bindyarani, it was a make of brake lift in his final attempt at clean and jerk.

She had failed to lift 114 kg and went on to win the silver medal at 116. It takes a lot of courage and self-confidence to be able to overcome this and that comes from facing adversity. “Right said. It’s about a burning desire to do good for your country. To show the world what we can do. Sport is about respect. It gives us the respect we deserve. So you know how important this is to us,” Jeremy said.

The pairing of Portland, Ore.-based sports-friendly brands Official League and BVB will include licensed merchandise expected to debut in September or October. The association comes as the licensed sports business continues to grow internationally. To attract more attention to the crowded field of athletic and team-focused brands, Official League launched the Official League Collector’s Club, a one-month club membership service. Plenty of licensed goods.

With an annual turnover of 400 million euros and 16.5 million Instagram followers, Borussia Dortmund have recently entered the second round of the German knockout football competition DFB Pokal, which is held every year. The German Football Association, thanks mainly to BVB forward Doniel Malen, was involved in all three of the team’s goals in defeating 1860 Munich.

For the first year, merchandise will be sold only on the official league’s website, according to a company spokesperson, who declined comment about the first year’s estimated wholesale volume. @bvbshop fans on Instagram are out of luck because they won’t be getting the new hats there.

shushila: CWG 2022: Judoka Shushila wins silver in women’ 48kg, Vijay gets bronze

Indian judoka L Shushila Devi signed off with a silver medal after losing in the women’s 48kg final to South Africa’s Michaela Whitbuy at the Commonwealth Games here on Monday.

In a tight match, Shushila fought hard before losing the final via ‘Waza-ari’ in 4.25 minutes. This was India’s second silver medal in the showpiece. She was also the runner-up at the 2014 Glasgow Games.

Earlier, Shushila had assured the country of a medal after defeating Mauritius’s Priscilla Morand in the final.

The 27-year-old from Manipur knocked Morand down ‘ippan’ to clash with South Africa’s Michaela Whitebuy for the gold medal.

Ippon is a move in which a competitor throws his opponent on the mat with enough force and speed so that the opponent is on his back. An ippon is also awarded when a competitor immobilizes his opponent with a grappling hold-down for 20 seconds, or when an opponent gives up.

Sub-Inspector Shusheela of Manipur Police had defeated Harriet Bonface of Malawi to enter the quarter-finals on the first day.

In men’s 60kg repechage, Vijay Kumar Yadav put on a stellar performance to enter the bronze medal match with a ‘Waza Ari’ win over Dylan Munro of Scotland.

A ‘waza-ari’ is awarded after a player has thrown his opponent with control and accuracy, but not to the extent of an eyepan.

The 26-year-old Yadav, who won the Commonwealth Championships in 2018 and 2019, lost to Australia’s Joshua Katz in the quarter-finals but improved in repechages. He will face Cyprus’ Petros Kristodoulides in the bronze medal match.

Jasleen Singh Saini will also fight for the bronze medal after losing to Finlay Allen of Scotland in the men’s 66kg semi-final.

Saini, who had reached the semi-finals earlier in the day, lost to Scotland after a performance by ‘Ippen’ in a match that lasted a little less than two-and-a-half minutes.

The 24-year-old Saini, however, has a chance to secure a podium finish as he competes against Australian Nathan Katz in the bronze medal play-off tonight.

Suchika Tarial has already advanced to the bronze medal round in women’s 57kg repechage by defeating Donne Breitenbach of South Africa.

India won two silver and two bronze in Glasgow 2014, their best ever performance in Judo.

The loss means the 24-year-old Indian judoka will now face Australia’s 71st-ranked Nathan Katz in the bronze medal event.

How Five POC-Owned Fashion, Beauty Brands Are Dealing With Inflation – WWD – Pen 18

CWG 2022: Weightlifter Achinta Sheuli bags India’s third gold

Weightlifter Achinta Shuli (73kg) won India’s third gold medal at the Commonwealth Games here.

A strong contender to win the competition, Sheuly won the gold medal by lifting 313 kg (143 kg + 170 kg) at the NEC Hall here on Sunday.

Eri Hidayat Muhammad of Malaysia, who gave a tough fight to Shuli, finished as the second best lifter in the event. He put in a best effort of 303 kg (138 kg + 165 kg).

Canada’s Shad Darsigny was third with a total weight of 298 kg (135 kg + 163 kg).

“I am very happy with it, I have worked hard for this medal. A lot of sacrifices of my brother, mother, my coach and the army have gone to this medal,” Shuli said after the win.

“It was the first major event of my life and I am grateful to him for helping me reach here. This medal will help me in every aspect of life. There is no looking back from now on.”

Asked to whom he would dedicate his gold medal, Shuli said, “I would like to dedicate this medal to my late father (who passed away due to a heart attack), my brother and my coach Vijay Sharma who They slap and scold me when I make a mistake. I am his own child.”

Shuli, a junior World Championships silver medalist, executed three clean lifts – 137kg, 140kg and 143kg – in the snatch category.

His 143kg effort helped him break the Games record and improve his personal best.

Moving towards a clean-a-jerk with a gain of five kilograms, the Kolkata-based lifter started with a lift of 166kg, which he hoisted with ease.

Shuli then foiled his 170 kg attempt to increase the weight on the third attempt and set a new game record in total lift (313 kg).

The Indian lifter had to wait patiently till the end to find out which medal he would take home as the Malaysian attempted to lift 176kg in his last two attempts, but was unsuccessful.

When asked what his coach Sharma told him before the final clean and jerk attempt, Shooley said, “He told me this gold is mine, just keep calm and go for it. I was a little nervous but his performance was better than me.” It was too low and I went for it.”

With Sheuly’s gold, the Indian weightlifting contingent secured its sixth medal of the Games.
