She continued, “I simply refuse to believe that something like this has happened in my country and I am unaware of it because I take great pride in calling myself a conscious citizen. I know what happens across the country. How can something this cruel get out of my notice! When the research started coming in I realized ‘No, it’s my fault. I never knew it.’ There was this tremendous sense of guilt when we started listening to the tragedy. At the same time, there was a great sense of betrayal.”

The actress said that she was shocked to know the brutal truth of the community and felt really inspired to bring this story on screen when she finally came to know about it and researched it. “When we realized the seriousness the Kashmiri Pandit community is going through, we realized that this is not a story of a community being driven out of the Valley. It was a story of carnage and it needed to be told. Our country has not faced genocide, neither in the years gone by, nor in the pages of history. This happened while we were living. I was a young woman standing on my feet, earning her bread and butter and I was not aware of this. How terrible is that,” she said. Watch the full interview here:
