Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani remained in police custody for over a week as the Barpeta sessions court had reserved its order on his second bail plea. After getting bail for five days in police custody and jail in one case filed against Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his two tweets, he was sent to five days police remand in another case. Following a complaint against the tweet, Mevani was arrested late last night from Banaskantha district of Gujarat and brought to Kokrajar in Assam.

Mevani’s lawyer Angshuman Bora told ET, “We have presented our arguments, but the sessions court has reserved the order.” The public prosecutor tried to adjourn the bail hearing, but the court asked him to submit his arguments today itself.
The charges against Mevani in the second case include ‘voluntarily causing hurt’, ‘criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of duty’ and ‘intending to outrage modesty on a woman cop’. On the occasion of Modi’s visit to Assam, Congress workers across Assam staged a sit-in demanding the release of Mevani.
