The decision to reverse Roe v. Wade has sparked a flurry of reactions, especially from celebrities on social media.
On Friday, the Supreme Court struck down the landmark ruling, ending women’s constitutional right to access abortion after nearly 50 years. In May, a draft of SCOTUS’s decision to overturn the row was leaked, causing a stir among women’s rights and abortion advocates.
As soon as the news of the decision broke, celebrities, political figures and others took to social media to post statements and personal sentiments on the decision.
Former First Lady Michelle Obama wrote a statement, which she posted on her official Twitter account, announcing that she was “heartbroken” by the news.

Former President Barack Obama also wrote a series of tweets, linking a Medium article he wrote with Michelle Obama on his thoughts about the Supreme Court decision. The story was dated May 3, the day after the draft was leaked.
“Today, the Supreme Court not only overturned nearly 50 years of precedent, but made the most deeply personal decision to the whims of politicians and thinkers – invading the essential freedoms of millions of Americans,” Obama wrote in a tweet.
Jonathan Van Ness, best known for being part of the Fab Five of Netflix’s “Queer Eye,” also wrote on his Twitter, “It’s about controlling bodies and keeping people in systemic poverty for generations. It’s heartbreaking that this personal medical decision has been made by people trying to force their evangelical beliefs on all of us.”
Oscar-winning actress Viola Davis reposted a carousel of images from the popular Instagram account So.Inform, providing useful and informative information about what the decision means and what people can do to help.
“And so it goes…. Disappointed. Now more than ever we have to use our voices and power! We the people……,” read her caption on Instagram.
Comedian and actress Amy Schumer also posted a call to action on her personal Instagram account, accompanied by an image, “Are you ready to fight back when Row turns around?” The photo included a number for the text and a link to the site Ban of Our Bodies.
Keke Palmer wrote only two words on Twitter to explain how many people feel: “I’m devastated.”
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a congresswoman representing New York’s 14th congressional district, shared an important fact that while abortion may be outlawed, abortion will still happen, but in more dangerous circumstances.
“They will never get away with reversing the row and outlawing abortion,” she wrote. “It only makes them more dangerous, especially for the poor + marginalized. People will die from this decision. And we won’t stop until abortion rights are restored in the United States.”
Stars like Jamie Lee Curtis, Gracie Abrams and Amanda Kloots also posted their thoughts on Instagram and Twitter. Scroll to read more.

The court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade would be responsible for the death of so many women in this country.
It violates our dignity and our right to access private medical care.
It is a denial of our physical sovereignty.— Gracie Abrams (@gracieabrams) 24 June 2022
