india: Commonwealth Games 2022: India won 66 medals in 2018. How many will come this time?

In the absence of shooting, which contributed 16 out of 66 medals in 2018, how will other sports progress? Can India touch the 50 medal mark? Although it is hard to predict, historically four sports – boxing, wrestling, weightlifting and badminton – have contributed to the majority of India’s medals at the Commonwealth Games (CWG). Here’s how these games stack up at the 2022 CWG, starting today:

Badminton Medal Expected:5

India is expected to dominate the game and win many gold medals. PV Sindhu starts off as a strong contender in women’s singles while India have a real chance of winning gold in the mixed team. Some great performances are expected from Kidambi Srikanth and Lakshya Sen in men’s singles. The doubles pairing of 2018 silver medalist Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty will be striving for the top spot in 2022.

Weightlifting Medal Required: 8-9

Mirabai Chanu and Jeremy Lalrinnunga are both expected to win gold. Chanu is the runaway favorite in 49kg, but can she better her Tokyo mark in the clean and jerk (115kg)? For Jeremy, this could be a big step forward after his 2018 Youth Olympics victory.

Boxing Medal Required: 7

It is redemption time for the sport after a poor showing in Tokyo, with only Lovlina Borgohain winning the bronze medal. In Birmingham, Nikhat Zareen will look to continue her good form and win gold, while Amit Phangal is expected to return to the winning track after a disappointing Olympics. Lovlina is also in good shape despite the coach controversy, and few young boxers like Sumit Kundu can punch above her weight for India.

Wrestling Medal Required: 7-8

It is a sport where India has done extremely well in most of the multi-disciplinary events and the Tokyo Olympics was no different. While Ravi Dahiya and Bajrang Punia won medals, Deepak Punia made his place within 10 seconds of winning the bronze medal. Vinesh Phogat, who was not up to her own standards in Tokyo, would like to prove a point in Birmingham. This is a team that can bring India the maximum number of medals including three golds.

Total Medals Expected: 40
