Forsythe thinks the look resonates heavily with fans for its authenticity and range of looks from the mid-1980s to the late 1980s.
“I get a lot of calls from coworkers and people like, ‘I lived in the ’80s and it was so perfect,” she said. “They’re like, ‘I wore that makeup and my friend is like that’ [character], I feel like people really resonate with it. And people who weren’t there at the time, I feel like they can still feel that authenticity when they see it and it looks so cohesive. ,
Forsythe’s approach to beauty in “Stranger Things 4” is different from the norm. Instead of focusing on the beauty of the main characters, Forsythe focused more on the background characters. This approach was to maintain the authenticity and individuality of the show’s established characters, but also set the fictional Hawkins, Ind., and typical settings of Lenora, Calif.
While Hawkins’ characters are more bare and traditional, Lenora’s characters adopt graphic colors and the retro-inspired trends that prevailed in 1986.

But that’s the show – it’s showing you different kinds of people from different places, And I think that’s what beauty really shows.”
Forsythe said one of the scenes that really stood out to her is the rollerskating rink scene from the beginning of the season because she got to play with ’80s beauty trends, especially for bully characters.

“California” [scenes] I would say it was a lot of fun because you really got to show that this is ’80s cinema,” Forsythe said. “Like, when you go back and look at ’80s movies it would be that makeup Is. The background is a character in our show, so I think with threats, we specifically added things that [replicated] Icons of the ’80s. You have glitter eye shadow, you have too much blush, you have pink lip gloss and these are all things that you can’t necessarily put on one of the main actors without distracting them. ,
While she stuck with a simplistic aesthetic approach to the main characters, Forsythe said the character she thinks had the most striking beauty moment in “Stranger Things 4” is Robin Buckley, played by Maya Hawke.
At the end of the season, the character tweaks his tomboy aesthetic to impress a male psychiatric doctor. The character gets a makeover from Nancy Wheeler, played by Natalia Dyer, whom Forsythe called repeated makeup on Robin that she had seen on her mother.
“We’ve never seen [Robin] beauty makeup look,” said Forsythe. “When we see her go [the] penhurst [Mental Hospital], we see her out of her element and like Nancy watching her mom put on her makeup. It’s a fish out of water, but I thought it was really fun. ,
Overall, Forsythe said that the funniest part of “Stranger Things 4” was the sheer range of characters from the season and it gave them the opportunity to experiment with their looks.
“It was really fun this season as the world got a little bit bigger, so you get a little more of the 80s stereotypical vibe through the characters,” she said. “We have Dungeons and Dragons [characters]We have jock and bullies in California, so you can really start touching on all the things that you really weren’t able to show up before.”
