Some prisoners to get remission

India will provide special exemptions to certain categories of prisoners such as women in the current year and 2023 to mark the 75th year of its independence.

A senior government official told ET that a plan to this effect was approved by the cabinet on Tuesday. These prisoners will be released in three phases – August 15, 2022, January 26, 2023 and August 15, 2023.

Another person familiar with the move said the purpose of the waiver scheme is to ensure prison discipline and good conduct on the part of inmates, with the possibility of early release from prison as an incentive.

Eight categories of prisoners who have consistently maintained good conduct during their term in prison will be eligible for special exemptions, including women aged 50 years and above and transgender offenders who have completed 50% of their total sentence term.

Male offenders aged 60 years and above, who have completed 50% of their total sentence period, will also be eligible under the scheme. Physically handicapped or handicapped convicts with 70% and more disability who have completed 50% of their total sentence term, and mentally ill offenders who have completed two-thirds (66%) of their total sentence term is, will be considered under this scheme. A source said that poor or impoverished prisoners who have completed their sentences but are still in jail due to non-payment of fines imposed on them will also be eligible under the scheme, under which their fines are waived.
